So, I've run into a problem with setting myself (as well as our talented staff) up for giving away free consultation. Typically this occures when we are asked to bid a set of plans from either an architect direct or a contracting company, from 1 fireplace to 50 fireplaces, doesn't seem to matter. But when we look at the plans we find problems from inncorrect venting configurations to combustible decorative shrouds. And everywhere in between. The problem arises when we open our mouths to inform them, politely, that this is either inncorrect or will not function as designed, go on to disclose what should be done or how to correct the problem, and there it is FREE consultation. Knowledge and ablity that we have, only because we payed for it with money , time, and commitment, then gave it away.
ANY THOUGHTS How can we make money based on our education without losing work by stating "Thats wrong and for $$$ We'll tell you why"

Maybe you can tell them the design is wrong and you can give them a bid for doing it this way, but you can't build it as per plans. You might add that anyone who offers to build it this way may not be knowledgeable, or may plan on negotiating a change order later. Offer your plan/design service at this time.
